ESL Recognition Ceremony at WVOC

Today hundreds of English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students and lots of ESL teachers got together in Dellefield Park at West Valley Occupational Center to celebrate completing another semester.

Assistant Principal of Adult Counseling Services Angela DiMascio was the M.C.

The West Valley Chorale — Tim Sheridan, conductor.  Actually three classes all chose to sing the same song, so they did it together.

Karen Hribar (center right, white blouse with light green thingie) with her class.  She teaches upper level in the class next to mine and is head of the ESL program at WVOC.

Persian women from different classes spontaneously broke into dance on the stage.  It was kind of like a flash event.

Jose Penado (center) was my student and has been very active in WVOC’s campus as a member of the Shared Decision-Making Council and of the student leadership council.  The pretty woman behind him is Normaya (sorry, the last name is quite long & I’ve forgotten).  She was my student and is from Malaysia.  She brings her little boy to child care at WVOC and studies here all day.

Another former student of mine, Cedrick, is from Congo and speaks amazingly good English with a French accent.  He also writes well.  He was a featured speaker at the ceremony, and spoke beautifully about his impressions of life here.

My wife was a student of Karen Hribar. They had an international fashion show on this very stage. That was way back in 2004. We do not live in the US anymore but these photos brought back sweet memories! It is great to see her again. Thanks John.
