Meditations from February 2010

We learn the hard way to have a bigger heart.

To silence, my endless friend, the ocean of calm where hope waits eternally for wisdom to awaken in our brains.

The judgment finds its way back to the judge.

The beauty we see in others is our own. The ugliness we see in others is our own.  Therefore the best beauty treatment is to see the beauty in others.

An Affirmation

I live without fear or enmity, not hating or fearing anyone, not judging anyone, not feeling myself to be better or worse than anyone.  None of my energy goes into pointless fighting, and so it is free to be joyful and loving.

Will we go gladly to a place of joy, or must we be dragged kicking and screaming?

By loving and serving humanity, we most truly and magnificently serve our God.

If there is a God, which I believe there is, that supreme creative power and intelligence must be so vast, infinite, and transcendent that whatever we can think or say about Him, Her, It, or Them must be kind of ridiculous compared to the reality.  How can we presume to know what God wants?  By reading holy scripture?  Who wrote that holy scripture?  Human beings, of course—men, generally, although some of my favorite spiritual writers and leaders are women.  But my point is that whatever we can cay or think about God is of its very nature limited by our human perceptions and perspectives.  The words we use to talk about God are and must be inadequate.  The forms and rituals we use to worship God are and must be inadequate.

Therefore I choose a more liberal, liberated, and liberating view, which is that the best I can hope for is a personal, intimate EXPERIENCE of God, feeling my own heart a sense of what God might be, listening with complete openness and acceptance what God and the angels might have to say to me.

What I feel is that God is not Allah or Yahweh—and I certainly hope He, She, It or They is/are not, given the horrible things done in the name of those names.

I feel that God is a pure and infinite being, light beyond light, love beyond love, wisdom beyond words, creative power beyond creation.

You are not a victim. You are a creator of causes.  You have far more power than you know, perhaps more than you can imagine.  The key is first to exercise the power you have, and second to accept responsibility for the outcomes of your choices.

Also know the power of cooperation. Severally, you are far more powerful than separately. Find others of common purpose and work together. Exercise self-control and consideration. Respect all.  \Even those whom you consider beneath you, those whose talents seem less than yours, those who don’t seem as smart, organized, or self-controlled. They have gifts and talents you cannot dream of.

We find our selves in others.  That which we hate most in others, we hate most in ourselves.  That which we admire in others, we activate in ourselves.
