Snowy mountains January 3, 2010

This has been an unusually cold winter, with a lot of precipitation.  On the night of Jan. 2, the snow level dropped down to 2,000 feet or less.    On Jan. 3 there was snow on the ground in Santa Clarita for the first time in many years.

From a cliffside near my house I took these shots of the San Gabriel Mountains, including areas of the Angeles National Forest burned during the Station Fire in 2009.  The wider shots were taken in the morning; the second shot below, zoomed closer to some peaks with a 300-mm. lens, was taken in the afternoon, after the heavy clouds had cleared.

As my mom used to say about the mountains:  “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.”
